3rd August

LYDIA

Early convert of St. Paul

After Paul and his missionaries arrive in the Roman colony of Phillip, they went to the synagogue to instruct some women they found gathered there. One of them was Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth. She heard the truth in Paul’s preaching and was baptised with her household, and insisted that Paul and the others accept the hospitality of her home, also sheltering them after they were attacked and arrested.

28th August

AUGUSTINE of HIPPO

Bishop and doctor of the Church b. 354, d. 430

Though Augustine’s initial surrender to Christianity was made famous by his Confessions, he considered conversion to be a lifelong process. Rejecting his mother’s Christian faith, he headed off to school in Carthage where, like many young boys, set free form family oversight he indulged in any vice available. At the age of 18 he took a mistress with whom he lived faithfully for 15 years. But over the years he began to see his worldly dreams as empty and began to yearn for something lasting. St. Ambrose of Milan convinced him of the intellectual truth of Christianity, but he continually struggled to embrace the Christian life, knowing that it would mean giving up worldly pleasures. After his baptism, he continued his conversion in a small community in Africa, where he wrote theological works so popular that a crowd in Hippo forced his ordination. Three years later he was consecrated bishop. At a time when heresies threatened the church, he fought for Catholic unity with his words and example, for which he was beaten and almost murdered.
