3rd July Thomas Apostle First Century Better known as ‘doubting Thomas’, for his disbelief about the resurrection, but 'believing Thomas' might better describe him since he was the first disciple to acknowledge Jesus as God. The four Gospels name him as one of the 12 Apostles chosen by Jesus, with the nickname Didymus (Greek for ‘twin’). Throughout John’s Gospel, Thomas’s natural pragmatism is transformed by the challenge of faith. At the last supper, Thomas voiced the anguished question of how could they follow Jesus if they didn’t know where he was going. Jesus responded that he was the way, the truth, and the life. After the resurrection Thomas refused to acknowledge that the Apostles had seen Jesus, announcing that he would only be convinced by solid flesh. But as soon as Jesus returned, he forgot his need for solid proof and cried out, ‘My Lord and my God,’ an affirmation beyond physical evidence.
31st July Ignatius of Loyola Founder of the Society of Jesus b. 1491, d. 1556 While recovering from a battle wound, this soldier discovered a glory greater than military success within a book of the saints’ lives. Retreating to a cave to seek God’s will, he developed a process of discernment and meditation using the senses and imagination, which he later developed into the classic ‘Spiritual Exercises’. Realising that education would increase the credibility of his teachings he went back to school. In Paris he gathered six followers who became the core of the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, insisting that their direction came from prayer. By the time of his death, the Jesuits had grown to 1500 members with 35 colleges and houses in 11 countries.
