Barnabas (Apostle) (died around AD60)

11th June

Scripture tell us that Barnabas, was a good man, filled with the Holy Spirit and faith, his name meaning, 'son of encouragement'. As his name implies, Barnabas was fervent in his efforts to win many converts. He also encouraged the Apostles to accept their former persecutor, Paul. After the Apostles commissioned Barnabas and Paul to spread the Gospel by the laying on of hands, they travelled together, preaching and founding churches. Although not of the original 12, Barnabas earned the title Apostle because of his special commission for missionary work. Tradition says he was martyred in Cyprus.

Peter (Apostle) (died around AD64)

29th June

Who would have bet the future of the church on an impulsive, uneducated fisherman who betrayed his master? But Jesus saw in Simon's heart and renamed him the 'rock' (Petros in Greek). Jesus demonstrated his respect and friendship for Peter by ensuring that he accompanied him at his transfiguration and his prayer at Gethsemane. After Jesus' resurrection, Peter reconfirmed his love for Christ three times and received Jesus' mission to tend his flock. Peter was the first to testify on Pentecost. He left Jerusalem after escaping prison and tradition has him founding the church at Antioch. Tradition suggests that he was killed in Rome during Nero's reign by being crucified, upside-down at his own request.
