From The Revd Rhona Floate, The Vicarage, Wool, 01929 462215 Lent – a time for growth Last month I asked whether you would personally keep the message of Christmas alive throughout the year? Did you come to any conclusions or resolutions? If you decided to do so, how might you nurture it so it can grow and flourish and add meaning to your life? One way to keep the message alive is to meet with other Christians for prayer and worship, for study, for conversations and discussion of what it is and how to apply it and live it. Our church services provide a forum for this week by week but I am aware that not everyone feels this meets their particular needs. We therefore provide other opportunities for meeting and exploring faith together: We have a home group that meets regularly through the year, and there are other times when informal courses are offered. In the autumn a number of people attended The Y Course and found it a stimulating and challenging time. It was both serious and fun, with new friendships being developed along the way. Lent is also a time when we traditionally set more time aside for reflection and exploration. Maybe you think it’s all rather solemn and serious, all sackcloth and ashes, bewailing our sins and generally indulging ourselves in a guilt trip. And you’d be wrong! Lent should be, first and foremost, a time for positive engagement and growth. It’s a time for taking something up that will strengthen our faith, rather than giving something up without really knowing why. Elsewhere in the magazine you can find details of our Lent course for 2010 which is called “Fully Alive”. Is this the way you can grow on that Christmas message in your life? It is not just for those who have all the answers – there wouldn’t be anyone there if it was – but for those with questions and a longing to live a rich and joyful life. Your friend and parish priest,
