What will happen to the message of Christmas in this New Year?

If you had a real Christmas tree, what will happen to it after Twelfth Night?

If it had no roots it will be thrown out with the rubbish. At best it will be shredded and turned into garden compost. At worst it might be dumped in a ditch somewhere.

Maybe you took advantage of the service offered by the Christmas Tree Man, a Dorset enterprise, and rented a tree, grown from seed in a pot. It will be collected and looked after through the next twelve months and be delivered to you again in time for next Christmas.

Or did you have a rooted tree and will plant it in your garden? With the right sort of care, it will grow and become part of your garden.

I want to ask you the same question about the message of Christmas? What will you do with it after Twelfth Night?

Will you cast it off as so much rubbish, or let someone else nurture it on your behalf for the next twelve months so you can enjoy it for just a few days? Or will you make it your own, tending it personally so it becomes an integral part of your life?

My hope is that you will allow the message of Christmas to become part of your life. For that is why Christ came to us in human form. He came to enable us to live a life that reflects the life of God, inspired by his example and set free from our sins, through his death and resurrection. It is through each one of us working to keep it alive day by day throughout the year that the message of goodwill to all can become a reality in our world and our own relationships with God will grow.

So my prayer for each of us for 2010 comes from a letter written by the apostle Paul, “that the one who began a good work among you will bring it to completion by the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1.6).

Your friend and parish priest,
