From The Revd Rhona Floate, The Vicarage, Wool, 01929 462215What do you see?We live in a visual age, surrounded by images on television, on the internet and in print media. We are able to take and distribute pictures cheaply and instantaneously. Research has shown that when someone speaks, their appearance and body language has far more impact than their words. In non-personal communications, visual impact is also crucial. Good layout and design, or the use of colour rather than black and white are more likely to get you noticed. The images we see also shape our thinking in subtle ways. The more air-brushed images of celebrities we see, the more professional the layout of websites and printed material, the greater our expectations. Whilst it is good to strive for perfection, there is a danger that we dismiss things and people who don’t live up to the ideals we see being portrayed. A recent example was Susan Boyle, the Britain’s Got Talent competitor who was in danger of being written off on account of her appearance and manner before she got a chance to sing. Then she was allowed to sing and we discovered a hidden beauty that astonished and moved many. Beauty is more than skin deep. It goes further even than invisible gifts such as a great voice. It can be found in character and personality and integrity of life and it is this beauty which I believe shows most fully the real purpose of human life, which is to reflect the perfect beauty (or glory) of God. It is this inner beauty that God sees in us even when no one else perceives it, giving each of us infinite value in Hs eyes. We will be exploring this theme this month as we invite people to Back to Church Sunday on 27th September, with the words “Come as you are”.
