The shape of things to come

As I write this in mid-December I anticipate a revolutionary Christmas for my family as I host it for the first time. My parents have hosted the family Christmas for the past 55 years. Our Christmas celebrations will inevitably be different but some familiar family traditions were still there too.

Changes like this can be unsettling because human beings are creatures of habit. Whether we like it or not, we become set in our ways.

We all develop routines such as when and what we eat, our choice of newspaper, radio or TV; where we sit in the pub or club. Within groups of people who meet regularly, you’ll notice how they tend to sit in the same place each time and I can confidently predict where the regular worshippers will be sitting in church each week!

Established patterns help to form our identity and enable us to function effectively. Without them we would be constantly “reinventing the wheel”. But these patterns need to be adaptable, if we are to survive and flourish in a world that is constantly changing.

The start of 2009 heralds some changes locally, for example:

bulletThis magazine has a new editor, Andrew Wilson, who will build on the tremendous work done by Jenny Hunt as Editor since 2003. Meanwhile Jenny continues to manage the magazine printing and distribution.
bulletElsewhere in this issue you can read about the changes that we’re making to services at Holy Rood Church in response to changing patterns of family life.

New Year is a good time to review our patterns, and ask what might need to change for the better. This process is at the heart of the Christian faith: We invite God’s Holy Spirit to guide us as we take an honest look at our lives and ask what needs to change if we are to flourish and live lives that are filled with love for one another and for God.

St Paul writes that we are to “be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that we may discern what is the will of God – what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12.2).

I pray that you may find His guidance and support through the changes that lie ahead in 2009.
