Finding your spiritual spaceElsewhere on the website (if you scroll down when you get there) you’ll read about the Bishop of Sherborne’s visit to Wool First School to bless their Spiritual Garden. The Garden will be used in a variety of ways to help the children develop, not only through the usual “spiritual” activities such as prayer. All of us need some form of spiritual space. It might not be a garden or a room. But it might be a particular chair or a time of day in which we give ourselves space to develop our awareness of the divine. We’re not alone in the struggle to create this space. As a charismatic teacher and healer who was always in demand, it wasn’t easy for Jesus either. The gospels record him making an early start before his followers were up, or travelling alone instead of with others. There are other barriers to our spiritual life. Some of us find it hard to be still and quiet in the sense of traditional prayer, meditation or reflection. It may be easier to read something that is thoughtful or thought-provoking, or to use background music. It may be helpful to go for a walk, or do something practical that leaves your mind free for reflection and conversation with God. One size will not fit all, so keep on trying different shapes and styles until you find something that suits you.
