“Never been richer, never been poorer”If you live in Bovington, East Burton or Wool, did you complete your Wool Parish Plan Questionnaire? Did you join in with Wake up Wool? I hope the answer to both of these is yes, because participation helps make our parish a better place to live. A recent book (Community Value, Lynda Barley, Church House Publishing 2007) claims that, while the UK is a nation that is more prosperous and healthy than ever, it is also clear that we have never been so unhappy. Based on other published research, the author writes:
People have a deep-seated need to belong to places and communities and that can only happen when we make time to communicate with one another and do things together. But modern life leaves little time to get to know the neighbours, or involvement in a voluntary organisation to provide activities for different age groups. A fundamental aspect of Christian teaching is that we belong to one another, like the parts of a body which need each other to function properly and this has always extended to churches providing community links, working with other organisations for the common good, and seeking to solve shared problems. While not losing sight of the church’s primary aim, which is to worship God, we look forward with great interest to the findings of the Parish Plan and considering how we can respond to the needs and hopes of these communities.
