Revd Bob Naylor from Winfrith, our Rural Dean, and Revd Judy Hill, our Curate here in Wool, write as follows:As many of you will know, the parish of Wool has been without an Incumbent since the departure of Revd George Butler almost two years ago. During that time Revd Judy Hill, as Curate, with help from Revd Bruce Lyons, a retired Priest who lives in the parish, has acted as Priest- in- Charge, and Judy and myself as Rural Dean, have worked very closely together to ensure that the needs of the parish have continued lo he met. We have tried, unsuccessfully on two occasions, to appoint a Priest- in-Charge, and will shortly try again. An advert for the post will appear in "Church Times" on May 5th and again on the 12th. Short listing will be on June 5"' and interviews will be held on June 26th. During my lime as Rural Dean, I have encouraged the members of the Clergy Chapter and the Deanery Synod to focus on the need lo take far more seriously our mission as Christians, to bring new disciples to Christ, and to present the Gospel more powerfully and effectively to all people and especially to the younger people and families who live in our towns and villages, and thus into our churches. This discussion, and intent, has been underpinned by our belief that in these changing limes for the church as a whole, we must be flexible and innovative in how we "do church". Patterns and models of ministry no longer consist of the clergyman or woman being solely responsible, and being the church means a lot more than gathering together in the church building Sunday by Sunday. This has meant that searching questions have been asked about our present practices as far as ministry is concerned, and the discussion which has resulted has thrown up some exciting possibilities for the future. We should be looking to work across traditional parish boundaries. We should be looking to identify, and use in the best way possible, the skills of both Clergy mid lay people, after identifying the real needs of our Parishes—and so on and so forth. The leadership of every Church, Parish and congregation in the land is the responsibility of that community- This is by no means a new and current fashion, for the Bible tells us that ministry belongs to the whole people of God by virtue of their Baptism into Christ. We are all called to share in the ministry of his Church—this is how we all learn, and this is how the Body of Christ grows. These principles are behind our ideas for the intended appointment in Wool. The person we appoint will have prime responsibility for the parish, but will also be licensed to work in the Benefice of The Lulworths, Winfrith and Chaldon. Judy Hill's licence will be extended allowing her to also serve as Curate in this Benefice. This will release me to develop a greater Deanery role in encouraging and implementing the policies we believe will result in more effective ministry for God and his Church. This is an exciting time for all of us as we look for fresher and more effective ways of working together in order to build up the Kingdom of God. Please pray for our Parishes and the wider Deanery as we seek to make the appointment in Wool and move forward in the ways that I have outlined. - Bob Naylor and Judy Hill |
