What does Easter mean to you?

Four years ago in The Times (April 14th 2001) there was an article titled ‘And He rose again for this’

- on how we got from the tomb to chocolate bunnies.

Apparently between Good Friday and Easter Monday, commemorating the days between Christ’s crucifixion and his resurrection, more than 26,000 tonnes of chocolate novelties are consumed in this country; and nearly £300 million on Easter eating.

The time for grief dawned, early on a quiet spring morning; the women arrived with the bitter spices and ointments, but found the tomb empty. This is the biblical account of Easter, an account of numbness, and bewilderment.

The disciples didn’t believe the women. Peter rushed to the tomb but all he found was the abandoned white linen shroud. Only by the end of that day did the disciples begin to understand that Jesus had not, after all been destroyed for ever.

The resurrection of Christ quickly became central to Christianity. More than two thousand years later, Easter is celebrated all over the Christian world. But the way many of us commemorate the experience of those terrified and frightened disciples is with a jolly, sentimental egg-fest featuring chocolate bunnies and Easter bonnets.

At Holy Rood on Easter Day we will celebrate the risen Christ and proclaim ‘Alleluia! Christ is risen. He is risen indeed. Alleluia!

And at the Easter Vigil, (see separate notice for Easter Services), we will say this prayer as we meet at the Easter Garden:

Risen Lord Jesus, as Mary Magdalene met you in the garden on the morning of you resurrection, so may we meet you today and every day: speak to us as you spoke to her; reveal yourself as the living Lord; renew our hope and kindle our joy; and send us to share the good news with others.

May your Easter be more than just a chocolate eating experience, may this Easter be a time of meeting with the risen Lord Jesus Christ.

Lent Course

Was the road that led Jesus to the cross joyfully embraced or stoically endured?

Does his journey have anything to say about the struggle we also face to do God’s will?

If you want to explore how we can follow in Jesus’ footsteps, committing ourselves to God’s will for us, coping with temptation and emotional turmoil, and staying the course through the hardest times to a remarkable outcome, come along and join one of the Lent groups.

Home Communion for the sick and housebound

The pastoral Team, LPA’s and Readers, have recently received some teaching on taking communion to the sick and housebound.

Some of them will be taking the sacrament out into the community after the Communion Service in church, usually on a Wednesday.

If you or anyone you know is unable to come to any of the services, either in Holy Rood, Knowlewood Knap or Hyde Place please let me know, and I will arrange for you to receive communion at home.                                                                                       Judy Hill 462888
